About Understanding Your AI

A former school principal who teaches teams to use AI.

Understanding Your AI is run by Tim Bish, a Saginaw, Michigan trainer with 19 years across education, training, and marketing. Tim spent eight years as a school principal and system administrator, then served as the in-house marketing lead at Vantage Plastics, where he used AI to run marketing and training solo across five business units and a nonprofit. He teaches Michigan teams to use ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini on their real work.

What does running a school have to do with AI?

Almost everything that makes AI adoption hard. As a principal, I watched new tools, new curriculum, and new rules land on teachers who were already stretched thin. The ones that stuck were never the ones with the best launch day. They were the ones where someone started with what people already knew, let them practice on real work, came back to check, and fixed what wasn't working.

As system administrator, I was also the person who had to make the technology actually work in the building, which taught me that a tool nobody trusts is a tool nobody uses.

Where did the AI part come from?

When I started at Vantage Plastics, AI wasn't part of my work at all. Three years later, it was how I ran marketing and training solo across five business units and a nonprofit. Over a 24-month window, qualified RFQs grew from 30 to 152. Every workflow I teach is one I've used to get real work out the door, with a real deadline, for a real business.

Do you build AI, or teach it?

Both, and the building is what keeps the teaching honest. I've built a custom CMS, client websites structured for AI search, and the pipeline that edits, captions, and schedules my daily videos across five platforms. I don't teach a workflow I haven't run myself.

What do you believe about AI?

That most teams need confidence more than new tools. That every number deserves a source, which is why my videos and articles cite theirs. That people should keep the judgment and the voice, with AI doing the drafting. And that an honest "this tool isn't worth it for you" is part of the job.

Why the name Understanding Your AI?

Because understanding comes before using. The tagline says it plainly: see it clearly, then use it.

What do clients say?

Both of these clients started out intimidated. Here's where they ended up.

“I've been working with Tim as my “AI Mentor” for over four months, and the experience has been incredibly valuable. Marketing was new to my role, and at first I was intimidated by all the AI tools. Tim has a gift for taking complex, technical concepts and breaking them down into clear, easy-to-understand explanations. He tailors his recommendations to my specific needs and skill level, which has made the process not only productive but also fun, for me and for our audience. Thanks to Tim's guidance, our company's social media presence has expanded exponentially.”

“I lead a marketing team that manages six different businesses, and while we knew AI could be valuable, we were initially intimidated and unsure of how to begin. When we connected with Tim, he provided practical training on how to use AI effectively, safely, and efficiently. Since then, it has felt like we've added the capacity of three additional team members. Beyond marketing, Tim has also worked with our accounting and estimating departments, helping streamline reporting, save time, and create stronger alignment across the company. We are incredibly grateful that we chose to learn how to use AI the right way, and even more thankful that we had Tim to guide us through the process.”
